Engineered wood is real timber on a stable core, which is why it copes with a house where the heating goes on and off all winter and solid wood would not. It still needs acclimatising in the room before it is cut, and that is the step people skip.
Wood moves with the seasons and a Willenhall house with a suspended floor moves more than most. The boards acclimatise in the room first, the base is made flat and dry, and the expansion gap is set properly at every wall and doorway. Done that way it stays tight; done in a hurry it gaps by the following winter.
Timber moves with the humidity of the room it lives in. A few days acclimatising lets it settle before it is fixed, rather than shrinking afterwards and leaving gaps.
